I meant to post this yesterday
Happy Fourth of July! I used to skip celebrating. I thought I could only celebrate it when there's finally freedom and justice for all. But growing closer to my faith and witnessing grief, I've learned to accept duality and the importance of appreciating what we do have.
I will say... it's not easy being a Latina who chooses to observe this holiday. Actually, I don’t openly do it. Because while it would be acceptable for me to wear a Cowboy Carter sash, it's somehow become frowned upon to rep the American flag -- at least on social media and around my friends and followers.
But guess what?! We live in a predominately white neighborhood and we proudly wave the flag because THIS IS what America looks like. We belong here and we're living the dream our parents came here chasing when they decided to immigrate to the U.S. over 30 years ago. Thank you God, and thank you America.
And for the record: It is and will always be ICE OUT, Love is Love, and Black Lives Matter. America is not perfect, but I refuse to let this Fourth of July disregard how far we've come AND accept how much more we need to do. The fight continues but for now, God bless, America.
